چکیده
Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient is a nonparametric (distribution-free) rank statistic proposed by Charles Spearman as a measure of the strength of an association between two variables. It is a measure of a monotone association that is used when the distribution of data makes Pearson’s correlation coefficient undesirable or misleading. Spearman’s coefficient is not a measure of the linear relationship between two variables, as some “statisticians” declare. It assesses how well an arbitrary monotonic function can describe a relationship between two variables, without making any assumptions about the frequency distribution of the variables. Unlike Pearson’s product-moment correlation coefficient, it does not require the assumption that the relationship between the variables is linear, nor does it require the variables to be measured on interval scales; it can be used for variables measured at the ordinal level. The idea of the paper is to compare the values of Pearson’s productmoment correlation coefficient and Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient as well as their statistical significance for different sets of data (original for Pearson’s coefficient, and ranked data for Spearman’s coefficient) describing regional indices of socio-economic development. key words: Pearson’s correlation coefficient, Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient, Kendall’s tau, regional indices of socio-economic development Jan Hauke, Tomasz Kossowski, Institute of Socio-Economic Geography and Spatial Management, Adam Mickiewicz University, ul. Comparison of values of Pearson’s and Spearman’s correlation coefficient on the same sets of data
Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient (denoted here by rs) is a nonparametric (distribution-free) rank statistic proposed by Charles Spearman as a measure of the strength of the associations between two variables. It is a measure of a monotone association that is used when the distribution of the data makes Pearson’s correlation coefficient undesirable or misleading. Spearman’s coefficient is...
متن کاملIncreasing the Accuracy of Blood Hematocrit Measurement by Triplicate Wavelength Photoplethysmography Method
Background and objectives: The importance of continuous monitoring and rapid and accurate informing of changes in blood components (e.g., percentage of hematocrit [HCT]), especially in acute conditions, has motivated researchers to use non-invasive measurement methods. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the association between blood HCT and photoplethysmographic signal and the possibility ...
متن کاملStudy of Correlations of Multichannel Human EEG
Contained in this paper are preliminary results in describing the multichannel human EEG data by measures of correlation. It is investigated if linear cross-correlation measures such as Pearson’s r, Spearman’s ρ, and Kendall’s τ would give the same information of correlation. The EEG data were recorded from 11 healthy adult human subjects, taken in two conditions: resting eyes closed and restin...

In network theory, Pearson’s correlation coefficients are most commonly used to measure the degree assortativity of a network. We investigate the behavior of these coefficients in the setting of directed networks with heavy-tailed degree sequences. We prove that for graphs where the inand out-degree sequences satisfy a power law, Pearson’s correlation coefficients converge to a non-negative num...
